Snowed-Under

This is the home of the kangaroo and the koala bear. It also boasts many celebrities such as Hugh Jackman, Nicole Kidman, Russell Crowe and Elle Macpherson. It’s famous for Bondi beach, surfing and shrimps on the barby. Some of you may have already guessed the location, but for those of you still in the dark, it’s Australia, and life down under is full of surprises.

This country has a lot more to offer than you’d expect. Whether you’re venturing away for three months, or jetting off for a year of global travel and undecided where to go, why not try something a little different and embark on an alternative Aussie experience.

Unknown to many, a scenic six hour drive from Sydney, will take you to a mysterious mountainous area called Kosciusko National Park. Here, you will find the most breathtaking views that Australia has to offer. Not only will you witness bewildering beauty, you’ll discover that this park is host to some fantastic ski and snowboarding resorts. Yes, it snows in Australia between June and September!

Back in 2008, I ventured on this trip myself and worked for three months in Thredbo ski resort in the Snowy Mountains, New South Wales. I would highly recommend this to any traveller looking for a holiday with a difference. The views are amazing, the locals are friendly – and many other travellers have the same idea of perfecting their ski/snowboarding skills, or are just there to have the craic and make some friends.

This trip was very easy to organise. It’s a bonus to have job security before you’re in the country. There are lots of different jobs on offer at Thredbo, from receptionists to bar staff, or more physical posts such as lift operators. If you go for the latter make sure you’re well prepared with an abundance of warm clothing.

If you do secure a job in the resort, Thredbo will set you up with staff accommodation so you don’t have the hassle of worrying about where to stay. However, you should be aware that this accommodation is usually in a small village called Jindabyne, which is a 25 minute drive from the resort.

A highlight for staff is a free season pass allowing you full access to the slopes; this usually costs AU$1,400 so you’re saving mega bucks there already. Another incentive is the opportunity of free ski or snowboarding lessons that are provided by Thredbo instructors.

Food in the mountains is not over-priced. The local supermarket in Jindabyne (Coles) is great for youngsters on a shoestring budget. A couple of the local restaurants also offer specials throughout the week. A juicy slab of Aussie beef, home-made chips and a beer only costs $8.

So, good luck young travellers and embark on the Thredbo working holiday, the ultimate alternative Aussie experience. Stay safe and keep in touch with your family and friends back home and enjoy your time down under.
